Common auto electrical jobs in Harrisdale

Harrisdale was gazetted in 2007 and is bounded by Warton, Ranford, Skeet and Nicholson roads. It has two large schools, a K-12 college and a senior high school that opened in 2017, and the Harrisdale Swamp Bushland covers much of the suburb's west.

Charging the camper trailer

A camper trailer's battery is usually charged from the tow vehicle through an Anderson plug. Thin cable, a poor earth or a missing fuse means it barely charges, even on a long drive. Heavy twin-core cable, a fuse at each end and a DC-DC charger in the camper give the best result. Our guide on how to wire an Anderson plug explains the steps.

Windows and locks in family cars

Rear doors on family cars open and close many times a day on school runs, and wiring through the door hinge eventually breaks. A window that only works now and then, or a door that won't unlock with the others, often traces back to those wires. Our guide on electric windows that stop working helps you narrow it down. Child locks add another switch to check.

Rear air conditioning in seven-seaters

Seven-seat SUVs often have a separate rear air conditioning unit with its own blower, controls and wiring. When the back seats stay hot but the front is cold, a failed rear blower motor, resistor or fuse is a likely cause. These are electrical repairs. If neither unit cools properly, the system may be low on gas, and that needs a licensed technician.

Batteries in larger SUVs

Big SUVs carry a lot of electronics: cameras, screens, keyless entry and power tailgates. All of them draw some power when the car is parked, and a battery that's getting old may not cope after a few days at home. If your car struggles to start after the weekend, have the battery tested and check for anything left on, such as a dashcam or accessory.

Harrisdale auto electrical questions

Why isn't my camper trailer battery charging while I drive?

The most common causes are cable that's too thin for the distance, a poor earth, a blown fuse or a smart alternator that drops its voltage. Measure the voltage at the camper's Anderson plug with the engine running: if it's well below the voltage at the vehicle's battery, the wiring is losing too much. A DC-DC charger in the camper solves most of these problems.

Is it worth fixing a rear air conditioner, or should I just use the front?

Usually it's worth fixing, especially for passengers in the third row on hot days. Many rear unit faults are electrical, such as a blower motor, resistor or fuse, and these are often cheaper to fix than people expect. Leaving a fault can also hide a refrigerant leak, which should be checked by a licensed technician.

Local tip for Harrisdale

A week before school holidays in Harrisdale, connect your camper trailer, run the engine for 20 minutes and measure the camper battery voltage. If it isn't rising, you've got time to fix the cable or fuse before the trip, rather than finding a warm fridge at your first night's camp.
