Common auto electrical jobs in Armadale

Armadale is about 28 kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD and is the jumping-off point for the hills, the dams and the South West, so local drivers often have a towing or touring setup to look after.

Caravan charging while towing

Many Armadale caravans head south along South Western Highway or out to the hills for the weekend. A common complaint is that the van's battery doesn't charge while towing. Long cable runs, thin wire and modern smart alternators all reduce the charge that reaches the van. A properly sized cable and a DC-DC charger usually fix it. Our guide why isn't my caravan battery charging while towing explains the causes.

Dual batteries for touring

Weekend trips to Canning Dam, Wungong or further down the South West often mean running a fridge and lights away from mains power. A dual battery system keeps the starting battery safe while the auxiliary battery powers the camp. The choice between an isolator and a DC-DC charger depends on the vehicle and the battery type. See how does a dual battery system work.

Electric brake controllers

Heavier caravans, horse floats and car trailers need electric brakes, and those brakes need a controller in the tow vehicle. Armadale's hills, including the climbs heading out of town, show quickly whether the brakes are set up properly. The controller must be wired with the correct cable size and mounted securely, and the gain adjusted to suit the load. A poor earth is a common cause of weak or uneven braking.

Lights for country driving

Driving home from the hills or the South West after dark means sharing the road with kangaroos. LED driving lights or a light bar can make a real difference, but they need a proper relay, a fuse and a harness that is protected from heat and chafing. Aim them correctly, and make sure they switch off with the high beam so you don't dazzle oncoming drivers.

Rodents in the engine bay

Homes on the semi-rural edge of Armadale, close to bush and paddocks, see more rats and mice in winter. They nest in warm engine bays and chew through wiring, sometimes causing warning lights, misfires or a no-start. Repairs need soldered or crimped and sealed joints, not tape, and the whole loom should be checked for more bites. Our guide rodent damage to car wiring covers prevention and repair.

Armadale auto electrical questions

Do I need a DC-DC charger or will an isolator do?

Older vehicles with a fixed-voltage alternator often work well with a simple isolator. Newer vehicles with smart alternators, or setups using lithium or AGM auxiliary batteries, usually need a DC-DC charger to charge properly. The distance between the batteries matters too, so a caravan almost always benefits from a DC-DC charger.

Why are my caravan's lights working but its brakes aren't?

The brakes use a separate circuit from the lights, usually through a 12-pin plug or an Anderson plug alongside a 7-pin. Check that the brake controller is powered and showing an output, that the plug pins are clean and that the brake earth is good. A blown fuse in the controller feed is another common cause.

Local tip for Armadale

Before a trip from Armadale up Albany Highway or down South Western Highway, plug the van in at home and walk around it with someone working the indicators and brakes. Check the breakaway battery is charged and the brakes are set for the load. Ten minutes in the driveway is far easier than a fault on the side of the road.
