Common auto electrical jobs in Hilton

Hilton was developed after World War II under the state government's garden suburbs scheme, with single homes on large blocks. Many older homes are being replaced with new builds, and the O'Connor industrial area is right next door.

Box trailers on big blocks

Hilton's wide blocks mean plenty of box trailers parked down the side of the house, used for tip runs, garden waste and moving furniture. Lights on trailers that sit outside for months fail from water and sun damage. Check them before every trip, replace cracked lenses, and keep a spare plug cover on. Our guide on wiring a 7-pin trailer plug helps when the plug itself needs replacing.

Work utes and trade vans

With O'Connor's workshops and trade suppliers a few minutes away, plenty of Hilton residents drive a work ute or van. Running power tools, fridges or lights from the vehicle battery shortens its life unless there's a proper second battery. A dual battery system with a DC-DC charger keeps the starting battery safe. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the setup.

Towbar wiring on newer cars

Many newer cars use computer-controlled lighting, so splicing trailer wiring straight into the tail lights can cause warning lights or damage. A vehicle-specific towbar harness or a module designed for the car is the safer option. It plugs into the factory connectors behind the tail lights and protects the car's wiring from trailer faults. Our guide on whether you need a towbar wiring harness explains when you need one.

Cameras for reversing a trailer

Backing a trailer down a narrow side path between the house and the fence is easier with a reversing camera. A camera on the car helps line up the towball, and a camera on the trailer shows what's behind it. Seal every connection and use a fuse on the power supply so a fault can't drain the battery. A wireless trailer camera saves running extra cable through the plug.

Hilton auto electrical questions

Can I run my power tools from my ute battery?

Small chargers, yes, if you use an inverter sized for the job and keep the engine running for heavier loads. Running tools for long periods from the starting battery will flatten it and shorten its life. A second battery with a DC-DC charger is the better setup for regular use, and it means the ute always starts at the end of the day.

Why do my trailer lights work on one car but not another?

The most likely cause is the car's towbar wiring, not the trailer. Check the car's plug with a test light or multimeter for power on each pin. Different cars may also wire plugs differently if previous owners did their own work. Newer cars with lighting modules can also refuse to power trailer lights if the harness isn't the right type.

Local tip for Hilton

If you're one of the Hilton households knocking down an older home and rebuilding, plan your garage power now. A dedicated circuit for an EV charger or a battery charger is much cheaper to add during construction than later. Ask your licensed electrician to include it in the plans, even if you don't need it yet.
