Work or live in Balcatta and need an auto electrician? Much of the suburb is commercial and industrial, sitting beside established family streets, so the work is an even mix of trade utes, small business vans and well-kept family cars.

Common auto electrical jobs in Balcatta

Balcatta grew from market gardens into a mix of homes and light industry from the 1970s. That gives it two kinds of customers: trades and workshops in the industrial streets, and families who keep their cars for years.

Trade ute lights and beacons

Trade utes working out of Balcatta's industrial streets often carry work lights, amber beacons and tray lights. Each one needs its own fuse, a relay for anything drawing serious current and a switch the driver can find easily. Water and dust get into cheap connectors on tray backs, which leads to flickering lights and blown fuses. Our guide how to wire a 12V relay shows the basic layout.

Tradie trailers

Cage trailers and box trailers are everywhere in Balcatta, carrying tools, green waste and materials. Their lights take a beating from vibration, rain and the odd bump against a loading dock. Sealed LED lights and a good earth wire back to the plug fix most faults for good. If the indicators flash fast or the lights work only some of the time, check the earth first. See how to wire a 7-pin trailer plug.

Windows and locks in family cars

Many Balcatta families have owned the same car for years, and as cars age the door electrics start to fail. Window switches wear out, regulators break and wires inside the door hinge rubber crack from years of opening and closing. These faults are usually repairable without replacing whole modules. Our guide electric window stopped working covers the checks you can do at home.

Cooling fans in summer

When the radiator or condenser fan stops working, an older car may overheat in traffic on Wanneroo Road, or the air conditioning may only cool while you're moving. A failed fan relay, fuse, resistor or motor is often to blame, and the electrical fix is usually straightforward once it's diagnosed. Don't keep driving a car that's running hot. Refrigerant work needs a licensed technician.

Balcatta auto electrical questions

Why do my ute's work lights keep blowing fuses?

A fuse that keeps blowing is protecting a circuit with a fault. On a ute it's often a wire rubbing through on the tray or chassis, water inside a light or connector, or too many lights on one circuit. Don't fit a bigger fuse, as that can start a fire. Trace the wiring and fix the cause instead.

My car's air conditioning only blows cold when I'm driving. Why?

That usually points to the condenser fan. At speed, air flows through the condenser by itself, but at idle the fan has to do the work. If it's not running, the system can't shed heat and stops cooling. A failed fan, relay or fuse is a common cause and is often an inexpensive fix.

Local tip for Balcatta

If you run a trade ute out of Balcatta, check your tray and trailer lights every Monday before the week starts. It takes two minutes with a second person or a reflective shop window behind you. Catching a blown globe or a loose earth in the yard is far better than finding out at a roadside check.
