Common auto electrical jobs in Alkimos

Alkimos is named after the Greek freighter wrecked just offshore in 1963. The Mitchell Freeway reached the suburb in 2023, Alkimos station opened in July 2024, and planning allows for around 55,000 residents across the wider Alkimos-Eglinton area.

Hybrids and EVs still have a 12V battery

Hybrids and electric cars are common in new estates like Alkimos, and many owners are surprised when one won't start because of a flat 12V battery. The small battery runs the computers and locks, and it can wear out like any other. High-voltage systems are for qualified technicians only, but testing and replacing the 12V battery is standard auto electrical work.

New cars near the beach

Even brand new cars corrode faster near the coast. In Alkimos, salt-laden sea breezes reach most streets, and towbar sockets, battery terminals and exposed connectors are the first to suffer. Spray towbar sockets with a moisture repellent and keep the cap closed, and have the engine bay checked for corrosion as part of routine servicing. Warranty rarely covers salt damage, so prevention pays.

Setting up for trips up the coast

Alkimos families often head north for camping and fishing. A late-model car with a smart alternator needs a DC-DC charger to properly charge a second battery or a caravan. An isolator alone won't do the job on most newer cars, because the alternator voltage drops too low to fully charge a second battery. Our guide on choosing a DC-DC charger or an isolator explains the difference.

Dashcams on late-model cars

Many new cars have sensors, cameras and heating elements behind the windscreen, so a dashcam needs careful placement and tidy wiring. Hardwiring to a suitable fuse with a low-voltage cut-off is the usual approach. Avoid tapping into airbag circuits or running cables across airbag curtains, which is a common mistake on DIY installs. A careful install also avoids broken trim clips and damaged windscreen sensors.

Alkimos auto electrical questions

Why won't my hybrid start when the main battery is charged?

Most hybrids and EVs use a separate 12V battery to power the computers that switch the high-voltage system on. If the 12V battery is flat or worn, the car won't start even though the main battery is charged. Testing and replacing the 12V battery is a normal job, but leave high-voltage work to qualified technicians.

Can I install a home EV charger myself?

No. A wall charger connected to your home's 240V supply must be installed by a licensed electrician, and your switchboard may need upgrading. An auto electrician can help with 12V systems in the car, but fixed household wiring is a job for a licensed electrician.

Local tip for Alkimos

If you've bought a new car in Alkimos, ask the dealer or your auto electrician whether it has a smart alternator before you fit any accessories. It changes how you should wire a fridge, a second battery or a caravan, and getting it right the first time saves pulling everything out later.
