Common auto electrical jobs in Wembley

Wembley is a Town of Cambridge suburb about 5 km north-west of the CBD. Galup, known as Lake Monger until 2025, sits on its north-eastern corner and Herdsman Lake borders it to the north-west.

Rats and wiring near the lakes

Wetlands like Galup and Herdsman Lake support plenty of wildlife, and rats and mice are part of that. A warm engine bay is an inviting place to nest, and some wiring insulation gets chewed. Warning lights, a car that won't start or a strange smell can all follow. Our guide on rodent damage to car wiring explains what to look for and how damage should be repaired.

Smart alternators on the freeway run

Many Wembley commuters join the Mitchell Freeway for a short run into the city. Newer cars with smart alternators charge hardest when you're slowing down and ease off when cruising, which helps fuel economy but can leave the battery undercharged on short trips. A battery warning light, slow cranking or stop-start that stops working are worth checking early. Our guide on what a smart alternator is explains how they work.

Angle parking on Cambridge Street

Backing out of an angle bay on a busy shopping strip is where low visibility catches people out. A reversing camera shows what's directly behind, and rear sensors give an audible warning for kerbs and bollards. On older cars, a camera in a replacement mirror or a small dash screen is an easy upgrade. Use a fused feed from the reverse lights and seal the camera plug.

Dim headlights on winter evenings

In winter, the drive home along Grantham or Selby Street is often in the dark. Cloudy headlight lenses and tired globes cut your vision more than most drivers realise. Replace globes in pairs so both sides match, and handle halogen globes by the base, not the glass. Our guide on how to change a headlight globe shows the steps. Check the aim afterwards, as a headlight pointing too low wastes the upgrade.

Wembley auto electrical questions

How can I tell if rats have been in my engine bay?

Look for droppings, shredded paper or leaves, chewed plastic covers, and bits of insulation on top of the engine or battery. A sudden warning light or a fault that comes and goes can also be a sign. If you find chewed wires, have them repaired with proper crimped or soldered joins and heat shrink, not just tape.

Why does my battery go flat when I drive every day?

Short trips may not be enough, particularly on cars with smart alternators that don't charge at full output while cruising. The battery may also be near the end of its life, or something may be drawing power with the car switched off. A battery test and a check of the charging voltage will show which it is.

Local tip for Wembley

If you park near Galup or Herdsman Lake in Wembley, lift the bonnet every few weeks and shine a torch around the engine bay. Nesting material or droppings caught early mean a quick clean-up. Keep pet food and bird seed out of the garage, as they attract rodents.
