Common auto electrical jobs in Baldivis
Baldivis was named after three Group Settlement ships, and its western half was zoned for housing in the 1990s. The suburb now has new estates and a big shopping centre on one side and rural land on the other, all a short drive to the Kwinana Freeway.
Electric brakes for bigger vans
Plenty of Baldivis families have stepped up to a bigger caravan, and once a trailer passes a certain weight it needs working brakes, usually electric. That means fitting a brake controller in the tow vehicle and wiring it properly through the trailer plug. A poor connection makes brakes weak or grabby. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers mounting, wiring and setting the gain.

Dual batteries for the fridge
A fridge in the back of the 4WD is almost standard for Baldivis families heading south for the weekend. Running it from the starting battery risks a car that won't start, so a second battery with a DC-DC charger or isolator is the usual fix. Which one you need depends on your vehicle's alternator. Our guide on choosing a DC-DC charger or an isolator explains the difference.

Utes and floats on the rural side
East of Baldivis Road, the land is still used for rural purposes, and properties there run utes, tractors and horse floats. Float lights get knocked around and corrode quickly when hosed out, and old wiring often has hidden breaks. LED lights, sealed junctions and a properly earthed plug make floats far more reliable. Check every light before you load the horses, not when you're already on Mandurah Road.

Cameras for vans and driveways
Backing a van onto a block, or a large SUV out of a tight driveway onto a busy Baldivis street, is easier with a camera. A wireless caravan camera shows what's behind the van on the road, while a standard reversing camera covers the car itself. Use a quality monitor that's easy to see in bright sun, and wire it to a fused supply.

Caravan battery not charging
A common complaint after a trip is that the caravan battery didn't charge while towing. Thin cable, a poor plug connection or a vehicle with a smart alternator are usually to blame. Measuring voltage at the van's battery while driving tells you a lot. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing works through the checks. An Anderson plug on the drawbar with heavy cable back to the vehicle battery fixes many of these problems.

Baldivis auto electrical questions
Do I need a DC-DC charger for my caravan?
If your tow vehicle has a smart alternator, almost certainly. Smart alternators drop their voltage once the starting battery is charged, which leaves the caravan battery undercharged. A DC-DC charger boosts and controls the charge, and many also take solar input. On older vehicles with standard alternators, an isolator may still work, but cable size matters either way.
How do I set my electric brake controller?
Start on a flat, quiet road with the loaded trailer. Set the gain low, drive at about 25 km/h and apply the manual control. Increase the gain until the trailer brakes firmly without locking the wheels. Recheck when the load changes. The controller's instructions give the exact steps for your model.
Local tip for Baldivis
Before a long trip from Baldivis, hitch up the van in the driveway and check everything: indicators, brake lights, tail lights, electric brakes and battery charging. Then do a short drive on Safety Bay Road and check again. Finding a fault at home is much easier than finding it at a roadside stop halfway down the Forrest Highway.
