Common auto electrical jobs in Waikiki
Waikiki was named in 1974 by its developer after the famous beach in Honolulu. It's closely tied to Safety Bay, with Read Street linking it to Rockingham and Port Kennedy, and its older housing means plenty of older, well-used cars.
Boat trailers after a season
Waikiki's beaches and nearby boat ramps make small boats common, and their trailers go into salt water every trip. Globes rust in their holders, earths corrode and wires break inside the insulation. Submersible LED lights, sealed junction boxes and a fresh-water rinse after each launch help a lot. Our guide on why trailer lights stop working helps you find the fault.

Boat batteries and accessories
Fishing boats carry a sounder, nav lights, a bilge pump and sometimes a second battery, all on a 12V system exposed to spray. Corroded terminals and poor fusing are common problems. Keep the battery in a sealed box, use marine-grade cable and tinned connectors, and fuse each circuit. Our guide on how to wire an Anderson plug helps if you charge the boat battery from your car.

Fast-flashing indicators
An indicator that suddenly flashes twice as fast is the car telling you a globe has blown on that side. On older cars, the globe is usually a quick fix, but corroded holders and poor earths cause the same symptom. Check both front and rear lights on that side, and the side repeater. Our guide on why indicators flash fast covers the causes.

Older cars that won't start
Many Waikiki driveways have a second car that only gets used occasionally. A car that sits for weeks often won't start, either because the battery has drained or because a corroded connection has gotten worse in the salt air. A battery maintainer helps. If a car jumps fine but dies again a few days later, have the charging system and any parasitic drain checked.

Waikiki auto electrical questions
Should I use LED lights on my boat trailer?
Yes. Sealed LED trailer lights don't have globes to rust or filaments to break, and many are rated as submersible. They also draw less current. Use good-quality sealed connections at every join, or the wiring will still corrode even if the lights are sealed.
How do I keep my boat battery charged between trips?
A smart charger or maintainer designed for the battery type is the easiest way. Disconnect or isolate the battery when the boat is stored, as small drains from sounders and bilge pump switches add up. Charge it fully after each trip, as leaving it partly flat shortens its life.
Local tip for Waikiki
After every launch from the Safety Bay or Warnbro Sound area, give the trailer a fresh-water rinse, including the lights, plug and wiring along the drawbar. Leave the trailer to dry before connecting it up next time. Every few months, open the light housings and check for water inside. Catching a little corrosion early saves rewiring the whole trailer.
